The tingling spread to my lips and throat and began to turn into a burn. I ignored it still, figuring it would pass, but was beginning to become uncomfortable. My sister glanced up at me and her eyes went wide. “Your lips are swollen!” As a teenager, I had a host of medical conditions. I spent more time in the hospital than out, and a lot of my conditions were relatively unheard of, even by doctors. One evening, I was sitting on the couch with my sister, thoroughly engrossed in building houses in The Sims, when my tongue began to tingle. That’s weird, I thought, but ignored it.
After that, everything just crashed. My lips, tongue, and throat were swelling, and it began to get hard to breathe. My sister yelled for my parents and I began to panic as my throat constricted tighter. My chest burned. The next five minutes were a blur. I had an Epi-Pen I’d never used for a dairy allergy and my dad knelt in front of me with it, hesitant to use it. I hadn’t eaten anything, after all – it couldn’t be an allergic reaction. And then my throat closed entirely. I stared helplessly at my dad, hands pressed to my throat, as my mom frantically called 911. I passed out as my dad uncapped the EpiPens, waking up drowsy and dazed minutes later with an aching thigh. My dad had given me two EpiPens, and the swelling began to go down.
